CHATTUARII

The Hettergouw at the lower Rhine in the Frankish Empire, named after the ''Hetware''.

The 'Chattuarii' ot ''Attoarii'' are a tribe of the Franks. They lived originally east of the northern Rhine and west of the Chatti, that later were called Thuringii. Their land was south of the Bructeri. In the 5th century many Chattuari crossed the Rhine and settled in the area between the northern Maas and Rhine, right west of their origin. From the 7th century on they must have formed a part of the Ripuarians.
The Chattuarii also appear in the poem Beowulf as "Hetwaras" where they form a lieger together with the Hugas (Chauci) and the Frisians to fight against a Geatish raiding force. The Geats are defeated and their king Hygelac is killed, Beowulf alone escaping. According to Widsith, the ''Hætwera'' were ruled by Hun.
