'Charmadoah' is a Victorian manse located in Harpers Ferry, Jefferson County, West Virginia within the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park. Situated high on Camp Hill, overlooking the Shenandoah River, Charmadoah was originally the summer home of a Col. Henry Miles, who commissioned its construction in about 1890. In designing the house, Col. Miles specified that "from every room a view of the river must be seen." Col. Miles' daughter, Helen, is credited with naming the house. As a child, Helen had difficulty pronouncing ''Shenandoah'', and instead substituted ''ch'' for ''sh''. That, combined with the "charming views of the Shenandoah," evolved into ''Charmadoah''. In 1920, Charmadoah was purchased by William F. Andes from Charlotte Miles, the widow of Col. Miles. Today, Charmadoah is owned by Shirley Hough Caniford, the granddaughter of Mr. Andes.
