CHALK RIVER, ONTARIO

'Chalk River' is a small town of about 800 people in Ontario 21 km NW of Petawawa, Ontario and 182.15 km NW of Ottawa, Ontario. It is about 15 km from Deep River, Ontario. Chalk River's elementary school is called St. Anthony's. Its classes go from Kindergarten to Grade 6, beyond which students are bussed to Deep River for schooling.
The town was first settled in the mid-1800s and named in 1875 after either the name (at that time) of the river that flowed to Ottawa or for the chalk used to mark timber floated along the Ottawa River. It is the site of Chalk River Laboratories. Chalk River played an important role in the settlement of the area due to the railway, in particular Deep River.
