'Cercanías' (called 'Rodalies' in
Catalonia and
Valencia) are
commuter train networks that cover major metropolitan areas in
Spain. Operated by the national rail company
RENFE, there are currently eleven Cercanías systems:
Asturias,
Barcelona (in conjunction with
FGC),
Bilbao,
Cádiz,
Madrid,
Málaga,
Cercanías Murcia,
Alicante,
Santander,
San Sebastián,
Seville, and
Valencia. Another system is planned to operate in
Zaragoza. It's well linked to Metro systems in
Madrid,
Barcelona,
Valencia and
Bilbao. The network was the target of the
2004 Madrid train bombings. The attacks killed 191 people in Sta. Eugenia, El Pozo and
Atocha stations, being the bloodiest terrorist attack in Spain to date.
