Metrotown and Central Park from Vancouver's
North Shore
'Central Park' is a 90-hectare urban park west of
Metrotown, on the
Vancouver-
Burnaby border. It has been a Burnaby landmark since 1891. According to '''The Greater Vancouver Book''' (Editor in Chief: Chuck Davis)
1, it was once a naval reserve set aside as a source of masts and spars for ships of the
Royal Navy. The park was named to honour Mrs.
David Oppenheimer, the wife of Vancouver's second mayor, who was born in
New York City.
Among its attractions are the award-winning children's playground, pitch and putt golf, and a couple of small ponds shared by
ducks and remote-controlled boats. Wildlife in the park includes
grey squirrels and
coyotes.
Swangard Stadium, another Burnaby landmark, is located at the northwest corner of Central Park.
The nearest
SkyTrain station,
Patterson Station, is at the park's northeast corner.
The main entrance to Central Park is off
Kingsway near Patterson Avenue.
