'Carefree' is an upscale town in
Maricopa County,
Arizona,
United States. According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the town is 3,706.

Carefree was first conceived in the mid-1940's by K.T. Palmer and Tom Darlington as a planned community. Land purchases were made beginning in 1955 and the first buildings went up in 1958. Emphasising leisure as well as Western culture, the street names reflect the overall feeling of Carefree: Easy Street, Tranquil Trail, Ho & Hum Roads. On a Western slant: Stagecoach, Long Rifle and Bloody Basin. The town’s motto is "Home of Cowboys and Caviar, Where the Old West Meets the New."
Carefree has the largest
sundial in the
Western Hemisphere. It stretches 62 feet and points to the
North Star.
Carefree has 15
restaurants, which is 1 restaurant for every 247 people, the highest per capita in the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Geography
Carefree is located at (33.827198, -111.923483) and is bordered by the City of
Scottsdale to the South and the Town of
Cave Creek to the West.
According to the
United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 22.9
km² (8.9
mi²), all land.
Demographics
As of the
census of 2000, there were 2,927 people, 1,389 households, and 995 families residing in the town. The
population density was 127.7/km² (330.8/mi²). There were 1,769 housing units at an average density of 77.2/km² (200.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.39%

married couples living together, 3.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.11 and the average family size was 2.44.
In the town the population was spread out with 12.7% under the age of 18, 2.0% from 18 to 24, 15.4% from 25 to 44, 40.5% from 45 to 64, and 29.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 55 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $88,702, and the median income for a family is $105,699. Males have a median income of $61,050 versus $38,750 for females. The
per capita income for the town is $62,433. 3.2% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the
poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.2% of those under the age of 18 and 3.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
