![]() | Jack Hicko plays Salamander by Jethro Tull When I first heard this song, I almost gave up guitar playing. It seemed to always defy my transcription techniques. Then I turned 50. My birthday present to myself was a month devoted to cracking this thing! I tried to frame it for guitarists and you should know it's DADGAD tuning. |

![]() | Rescuing the Tiniest Salamander After last night's rain, I saw an earthworm struggling in my dog's water bowl outside. Ever since I was a kid, I've had a thing for trying to rescue earthworms from drowning in the rain. So upon closer inspection, I saw a tiny salamandar on the bottom of the water bowl, totally submerged. How this tiny thing came to be on the bottom of my dog's huge water bowl, I have no clue. I thought it had drowned, but it was still alive. It's amazing the wildlife I can still find in the middle of concrete suburbia. ![]() | Evolution in Action: Ring Species This video presents to the layman an example of evolution as an ongoing process: The Ensatina salamanders surrounding California's Central Valley. CORRECTION: Approximately 42 seconds into the video, I made a geographical error. I incorrectly say, "... the San Francisco and San Juaquin Valleys ..." when what I MEANT to say was "... the Sacramento and San Juaquin Valleys." CREDITS: Salamander photos © Gary Nafis. ![]() | Plethodon Cinereus This is the largest salamander of this type I have ever seen - about 4 inches long. Also there are many brown and grey ones underneath pots placed on the sandy soil. I'll try to find a collection of eggs to post, but I rarely see them. [Sorry about the camera movement/focus - extreme magnification is difficult by hand. Hopefully, you can get an idea of the texture across the body and small proportion of the legs. Higher resolution version availible.] |
