The current 8th district since 2003
The '8th congressional district of California' covers most of the City and County of
San Francisco except for a corner in the southwest — the Sunset District and St. Francis Wood — that is part of the
12th District.
The 8th district is one of the most reliably
Democratic districts in the country, though
left-wing third parties like the
Green Party often poll well in the district. It is the smallest congressional district in the nation outside of
New York City.
John Kerry received 84% of the vote in this district in 2004;
George W. Bush received a mere 14%.
[1] The district has a
Cook Partisan Voting Index score of D +36.
History
Before the
1992 redistricting, the area was roughly equivalent to the
5th district.
Representation
Democrat
Nancy Pelosi, the
House Minority Leader from 2002 to 2007, and the current
Speaker of the House of Representatives, has represented the district since 1987.
