CABLEPULSE 24
(Redirected from CP24)
'CablePulse 24' (commonly known as 'CP24') is a Canadian English language cable television specialty news channel. Based in Toronto, it focuses on local news from the Greater Toronto Area and Southern Ontario, although it covers national and international news as well. It is distributed through cable in southern Ontario and direct broadcast satellite nationally. The channel (station) was licensed as 'Pulse 24' in 1996 and was launched under the ownership of CHUM Limited as "CP24" on March 30, 1998. On June 22, 2007, CTVglobemedia gained control of CP24 as a result of a takeover of CHUM Limited.
CP24 is currently close tied to Citytv Toronto sharing a newsroom, anchors, reporters and other staff with that station's ''CityNews''. News programming airing live on CITY, such as ''CityNews'', ''Breakfast Television'' and special coverage, is always simulcast on CP24. The Citytv stations, which could not be taken over by CTVgm, have been sold to Rogers Media (pending approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission). The channel (station) further shares resources with other CTVgm properties, and traffic coverage with the newsroom of CHUM's radio stations (CHUM and CHUM-FM) in the city.
The station's visual format is of a window using about two-thirds of the screen, where news and information programs are broadcast; the surrounding space contains weather and traffic information, along with scrolling news headlines and other details. This format has been described as more closely resembling a website than a conventional television channel.
In overnight periods, the station broadcasts historical newscasts from the ''CityNews'' archive as ''Rewind'', and news from international sources such as Deutsche Welle originated in English, or bearing English dubbing or subtitling, as ''Daily Planet''.
Most cable companies including Rogers Cable that carry the station air it on cable channel 24. The station does not air on any cable system outside of Central or Southern Ontario, but is available on direct broadcast satellite in some markets. The station is available across Canada on Bell ExpressVu, on which the station is part of the service's "News" package. It is also available in the "FYI" package provided to Star Choice customers. There have been at least tentative plans to launch localized versions of CP24 for other markets, such as Vancouver and Ottawa, and the other cities where Citytv stations exist.
The channel was originally owned by CHUM Limited with minority partner Sun Media, owner of the ''Toronto Sun'' daily newspaper. Sun writers and commentators were featured regularly on the channel. The relationship ended in 2004, when the Sun's owners sold their 29.9% share in CablePulse 24 after acquiring the independent broadcast station CKXT.
Unlike the Citytv stations, CTVglobemedia has not been required to sell CP24 as part of its acquisition of CHUM Limited. CP24 and Citytv Toronto are expected to continue sharing resources until at least 2008 when the Rogers purchase of the Citytv stations has been completed, pending approval by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). [1] Following a three-year transition period. Citytv will move to its new studios, by which point CP24's newsroom would most likely move out of the CHUM-City Building and merge into the CTV Toronto news department, located at the CTVgm headquarters in Agincourt, Ontario which will then share the same staff and programming from CTV Newsnet. CP24 produced programs end with a "CTVglobemedia" credit and a movie trailer. CTVgm will also keep CP24's branding and programming independent from the CTV Television Network and CTV Newsnet.
