The '39th British Columbia general election' will be held on
May 12,
2009, barring the unlikely possibilities of a
vote of no confidence from Liberal
backbenchers (which would result in early elections) or a
war (which would result in postponed elections). It will elect members of the
Legislative Assembly of the Province of
British Columbia (BC),
Canada. The
BC Liberal Party formed the government of the province prior to this
general election under the leadership of
Premier Gordon Campbell. The
New Democratic Party is the official opposition.
Under amendments to the BC Constitution Act passed in 2001, BC elections are now held on fixed dates: the second Tuesday in May every four years.
