BRENT EAST BY-ELECTION, 2003

The 'Brent East by-election, 2003' was caused by the death on June 18, 2003 of the Member of Parliament for the constituency of Brent East, Paul Daisley, of the Labour Party.
The by-election to fill his seat was held on September 13, and was won by the Liberal Democrat candidate Sarah Teather. In large part this can be explained by opposition to the 2003 Iraq War.
Turnout was 36.23%. At the 2001 general election, the Liberal Democrats had come third in the seat, with only 10.6% of the vote, but in the following 2005 general election they held on to the seat.
