Exterior view of Boon Lay MRT Station
'Boon Lay MRT Station' '(EW27)' is the terminal station of the
East West Line of the
Mass Rapid Transit in
Singapore. It is located at
Jurong West Central.
Boon Lay Bus Interchange, and
Jurong point are located next to the station, while
Nanyang Technological University is a short
bus ride away. The station has a very high passenger traffic, mainly because it serves the area westwards from the station to the coastline at
Tuas. It is very large area, which includes the entire Jurong and Tuas Industrial Area,
Jurong Island and
Jurong West New Town. Boon Lay station is the nearest MRT station to these places. This leads to congestion at peak hours.
Namesake
While Boon Lay MRT Station, together with the bus interchange of the same name, is situated at Jurong West Central, its actual namesake is
Boon Lay Place, located about 1 kilometre away.
Future plans
In
2009, Boon Lay MRT Station will cease to be the western terminus for the East West Line. Construction works for the Boon Lay MRT Extension (BLE) began in the second half of
2005. The extension from Boon Lay MRT Station is 3.8 kilometre long and includes 2 stations,
Pioneer and
Joo Koon MRT Stations. The Boon Lay extension aims to provide more connectivity to residents of Jurong West and workers in the Industrial Area. It would also help to relieve the abovementioned congestion at the station.
This station is also expected to be an interchange with the
Jurong Region LRT, though subject to confirmation by LTA.
