BOOKER T. WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL (MIAMI)

'Booker T. Washington High School' is a secondary school located at 1200 NW 6th Avenue in Miami, Florida. Booker T. serves the downtown Miami area; its principal is Regina Lowe-Smith.
Booker T. Washington Senior High School opened its doors in 1926. It is the second oldest public high school in Miami-Dade County. The school was converted to a middle school 1967 to help desegregate the Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Construction for the current Booker T. Washington Senior High began in 1996 and the school was converted back to a high school as an overcrowding reliever facility for Miami High School and Miami Edison Senior High School in 1999. In 2006, 11% of the students scored at or above proficiency in reading on the FCAT state examination and 39% scored at or above proficiency in math. The school is included in the district's School Improvement Zone, which includes an extended day and lower class size.
The school contains a unique feature amongst other high schools in the district as it holds a miniature planetarium on its ground floor that is opened to students and the public. The planetarium was built as part of an ongoing renovation program for Miami-Dade Schools. During this renovation, the school also received a new building and a complete overhaul of its old facilities. Currently, Booker T. Washington is the third smallest school among the public high schools in the district.
After receiving the Smaller Learning Communities Grant, the school organized into three schools-within-a school, each with a distinct Academy focus. The Academies include Entrepreneurship and Finance; Health, Child Development and Social Justice; and Foreign Language and Humanities. Booker T. Washington is a Secondary School Reform school, and offers students an eight class schedule to include a rich elective program, remedial reading and math, as well as Advanced Placement and Advanced Academics. Booker T. Washington Senior High School is an "I CHOOSE" school of choice, accepting students into the Academy programs through an application process.
Booker T. Washington's athletic rival is Miami Edison High School
The school's historic motto dating from 1926 is "Not the Largest... but the BEST!"
