'Robert G. Hill' (born
November 24,
1948) is an American
basketball coach. He has coached in the
National Collegiate Athletic Association,
National Basketball Association, and
Italian league. Most recently, he was head coach of the NBA's
Seattle SuperSonics from 2006 to 2007.
Coaching career
NCAA
Hill served as an assistant coach for
Bowling Green State University (1971–75), the
University of Pittsburgh (1975–77), and the
University of Kansas (1977–1985).
Between 1999 and 2002, Hill was head coach at
Fordham University in
New York. After posting a 2–26 record in 2002–03—the worst in school history—Fordham bought out the remainder of Hill's 10-year contract. "Fordham was my fault; I just shouldn't have done it," Hill told the ''New York Daily News'' on March 13, 2007. His overall record at Fordham was 36–78 (.316).
NBA
In the NBA, Hill has been the head coach for the
New York Knicks (1986–87),
Indiana Pacers (1990–93),
San Antonio Spurs (1994–96), and
Seattle SuperSonics (2006–07). Hill was most successful in the 1994–95 season, where he led the Spurs to the Western Conference Finals after a 62-win season.
Personal
Hill was born in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He and his wife Pam have three sons—Cameron, Casey, and Chris—all of which are involved in basketball. He published a book about coaching, ''Basketball: Coaching for Success'', in 2000.
