'Bloglines' is a web-based
news aggregator for browsing
weblogs and other news feeds via
syndicated feeds utilizing technologies such as
Really Simple Syndication and
ATOM. Unlike other
feed readers that download posts directly to one's device, Bloglines is a
server-side aggregation system, where blog entries are downloaded and updated on the server on a frequent basis
[1].
Users then subscribe to as well as read individual feeds via the
web portal, which provides them with the ability to access their feeds from any computer, not just the computer on which they have installed a particular
RSS Reader [2].
Mark Fletcher, former CEO of
ONElist, founded the site in
2003 and sold it in February
2005 to
Ask.com [3]., a division of
IAC Search and Media.
Bloglines has recently shown activity after over a year of stagnation. On July 23rd, Bloglines released an
iPhone version of their site. On August 27th they released a
public beta version of their site, with new features such as
drag-and-drop feeds in the feed tree and a customizable start page.
Because they have no ads on their site, it is still not known how (or if) Bloglines makes revenue.
