'Bhamashah' was a remarkable character of Indian history who gave his whole wealth to
Maharana Pratap, the ruler of
Mewar, to fight
Mughal Emperor
Akbar.He set up an example of love and sacrifice for the country of highest order.
After battle of
Haldighati Maharana Pratap had no resources at all to carry on the fight. Seth Bhamashah then offered his whole wealth to Maharana. With this help Maharana could organise Bhil army and carried on the fight to preserve the independence.
Bhamashah was born in 1547 and belonged to Kabadia gotra in the
Oswal Jain community, a business community.His father Bharmal was qiledar of Ranthambore fort appointed by
Rana Sanga and was later prime minister under
Maharana Udai Singh.
Bhamashah was chief and prime minister under Maharana Udai Singh and Maharana Pratap. He along with his brother Tarachand fought in several battles for Mewar. Bhamashah died in 1600.
There is a memorial in
Udaipur in honour of the great patriot.
A series of books written on the history of Rajasthan (incl. Mevaar, Marvaad) by the great Gujarati author late shri Harilal Upadhyay. He wrote one entire book on this great patriot.
Descendants of BhamaShah also served as prime ministers of the Maharanas of Udaipur for a few generations. His descendants still live in Udaipur.
