'Gordon College' is a private Christian liberal arts college located on a 450-acre campus in Wenham, Massachusetts. It is the only nondenominational Christian college in New England. Gordon College is a member of the Annapolis Group and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU),^[1] and is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc.

History

Founded in 1889 by Rev. Dr. Adoniram Judson Gordon, the college was originally known as the Boston Missionary Training School.
A.J. Gordon prepared men and women for service in the Congo mission field opening the school in the basement of the Clarendon Street Church in Boston where he served as pastor. During the first year the school opened there were 20 men and 10 women students and the teaching faculty consisted of their President, A.J. Gordon, one full-time paid instructor, and a part-time faculty of 4 teachers. Gordon passed away 6 years after founding the school. The school changed its name to Gordon Missionary Training School to honor Gordon.
Thirty years later, in 1919, the school outgrew its location at the Clarendon Church and Newton Theological. The school moved to the Fenway of Boston, into a facility given by Martha Frost. In the early 1950s a Gordon College student named James Higginbotham approached Frederick Prince about selling his estate to the college, and in 1955 Gordon moved to its Wenham campus.
In 1970, the divinity school separated from the college and merged with the Conwell School of Theology in Philadelphia. The two new schools settled about two miles from the original campus, forming the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts. The college and seminary are “no longer formally linked to one another.”^[2]
In 1985, Barrington College merged with Gordon College.

Academics

Gordon College offers degrees in "the liberal arts and sciences" and has 136 faculty members (97 full-time and 36 adjunct professors). The student-to-faculty ratio is 16:1 (1,528 undergraduate students to 97 full-time faculty).

Student Life

Gordon College Student Association, student ministries, intramural sports, and the Campus Events Council. There are student-led community service/outreach organizations, ranging from drama troupes to Big Brothers Big Sisters to Habitat for Humanity.
Students applying to Gordon College are asked to fill out a statement of faith and be willing to sign a Life and Conduct statement agreeing to the standards of behavior that Gordon values. Gordon College also has a dorm visitation policy that allows for male-female visitation only during particular hours. Chapel is offered Mondays and Wednesdays. On Sunday nights, students are able to participate in Catacombs, a student led worship service of quiet music in the darkened chapel. The Provost also hosts a film series every semester which includes international, political, and pop-culture films.

Athletics

Varsity sports are NCAA Division III; the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) and Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC). Teams represent Gordon College in Baseball, Basketball, Cross-country, Field hockey, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, Track & Field (indoor and outdoor), and Volleyball.
