'Barium peroxide' (
BaO2) is a grey-white
compound. Because barium peroxide readily absorbs
water it is used as a drying agent. Barium peroxide is also an
oxidizing agent which is used for
bleaching. It is used in
fireworks as an oxidizer
[1] which also gives a vivid green colour.
Barium peroxide is a
peroxide rather than a
dioxide because the oxygen atoms bond to each other as well as to the barium.
Barium peroxide with
sulfuric acid can be used to prepare
hydrogen peroxide via the following reaction:
BaO
2 + H
2SO
4 → H
2O
2 + BaSO
