In the early stages of the Yugoslav wars Serbs declared oblasts (meaning region in Serbian) in Bosnia and Croatia. These oblasts were called ''Српска Аутономна Област'' or ''Srpska Autonomna Oblast'' (SAO, Serbian Autonomous Oblast/Region). Oblast means region, but can also mean district.
