Aboriginal Culture, Tennant Creek, Outback Australia
Straddling the Stuart Highway just north of the famous Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve, the Northern Territory's Tennant Creek encapsulates the true spirit of the Outback. Here, Aboriginal art, culture and traditions are mixed with a diverse mining history and exploration heritage. Both the town and surrounding Barkly region are home to about nine Aboriginal groups including the Anmatyerre, Warumungu, Warlpiri, Kaytetye and Alyawarre, and you can learn the story of the Devils Marbles and other significant sites at the award-winning Nyinkka Nyunyu Art and Culture Centre in Tennant Creek. For a more contemporary take on Aboriginal culture, visit the Winanjjkari Music School where you can join in a jam, or just listen to the music being made. Translated to "singing for belonging", the school was developed for local Aboriginal people to express, make and record music, and covers all genres from hip-hop to country. Kakadu & Arnhem Land Culture Photo Journey, Australia
Visit a place where time stands still and an ancient culture lives on. For more than 40,000 years, the Aboriginal people of Kakadu and Arnhem Land have lived at one with the land. Follow in their footsteps and discover Australia through their eyes. Stories, told on rock canvasses, endure on the walls of Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock in Kakadu and further east at Injalak Hill in west Arnhem Land. On the remote, unspoilt coastline of Port Bradshaw at Bawaka, share their culture through traditional song and dance. Here, men attempt spear fishing mud crab and mullet, while ladies learn the ancient craft of pandanus weaving. Aboriginal history is intrinsically linked with the land and a visit to the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre in Yirrkala, 17 kilometres south of Nhulunbuy is a must. If you're lucky, you may get to watch artists bring their canvasses to life. For more information visit http://en.travelnt.com/experience/aboriginal-culture.aspx For more information about Kakadu National Park visit http://en.travelnt.com/experience/aboriginal-culture/moments-in-time.aspx
Aboriginal Culture, Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory, Australia
Bush tucker, world-class rock art sites and locals continuing their 40,000 year tradition of living in unison with their land -- Kakadu is the best place to go for authentic Aboriginal cultural experiences. This World Heritage-listed national park is only 250km from Darwin in Australia's Northern Territory. Be sure to stop at Bowali Visitor Centre and the Warradjan Aboriginal Cultural Centre when you arrive, to get your head around the lifestyle and seasonal nature of living in the park. Then, walk to the top of Ubirr and Nourlangie Rock lookouts for impressive views of the Arnhem Land escarpments with a lesson in Aboriginal life along the way. A cruise along the East Alligator River with an Aboriginal guide will teach visitors about the natural vegetation, effects of nature on the land and how Aboriginal people have worked with nature to preserve their way of life for thousands of years.
