AUSTRALIAN FORMULA TWO

'Australian Formula Two', sometimes abbreviated to 'AF2' is a formula racing category in Australia. Since 1978 the cars have been powered by production-based single-cam, 2 valve per cylinder engines, with an engine capacity between 1100cc and 1600cc. The engines are carburetted, have an 8500 rpm rev limit and produce in the order of 180 to 200 horsepower. Popular engines include the Volkswagen Golf, Toyota 2T and Ford Kent.

The engine must be based on that from a mass produced vehicle, it must have a capacity between 1100cc and 1600cc, have a single camshaft operating no more than 2 valves per cylinder and use carburettors for fuel induction. A rev limiter must be fitted to limit maximum engine rpm to 8500.
The bodywork must be of an "open wheel" configuration and there are limitations on both the position and size of the front and rear wings. The car must have a flat floor between the front and rear wheels and the minimum weight of the combined car and driver (racing weight) is either 510kg or 530kg depending on the age of the car.
The class uses a "control tyre" manufactured by Dunlop, to ensure both close competition and good tyre life.

Formula-R

'The next chapter'
As of 2007 a breakaway group formed Formula-Robertson (Formula-R) comprising of cars previously from Formula 2 and 3. The move was a result of ballooning costs and poor reliability. The category will field cars in the AMRS national series as part of the OzBoss event at AASA venues. Founder Terry Robertson previously sought reform to AF2 but was blocked by both CAMS and a minority of vested interests. While AF2 has seen dwindling numbers Formula-R is gaining strength in exile and continues to attract interest.
