 | Train Wreck - Winter Haven, Florida - August 1968 Chalk up another one for 1968! This is how my trip to Florida for my cousin's wedding ended, in a Florida orange grove. If anyone else has recollection of this incident, please leave a comment. We were in car #13A (I think there was an "A"), a couple cars or so behind the one that is perpendicular to the tracks and dug into the hill. The only fatality was the engineer of our train, though I don't believe it was immediate. I can only imagine what it must have been like in the cab of both trains when our train didn't switch tracks as it was supposed to. I was just transferring some old home movies when I decided this was newsworthy. I have more information on this somewhere in my files, including a local newspaper article that mentioned my name. I also have a spike from the tracks somewhere in my collection. When I find these things, I'll post images on my website and MySpace page. It seems the "Silver Meteor" (now under Amtrak, Seaboard Coast Line in '68) has been involved in at least a couple more accidents since this one. I was 8 years old at the time. My great love for trains suddenly waned. But the long-term effect is that I love trains as much as ever - and will often sit up front.
