Plot

Produced in Denmark in 1913 this emotional film is the tale of a surgeon Dr. Von Kammacher (Olaf Fønss) and his travels throughout Europe and America. Dr. Von Kammacher is devastated after his wife develops a head sickness and is institutionalised. He leaves Denmark to travel Europe and search for a cure for his wife's condition.
He travels to Berlin, where he meets a young dancer named Ingigerd (Ida Orloff) and the two have an affair. The pair head for the United States and plan to go to New York. The ship, the ''S.S Atlantis'', steams at record speed. The shipboard scenes focus heavily on the class division and tell several on board stories. Dr. von Kammacher falls in love with a poor Russian emigrant in Third Class and divides his attention between her and Ingigerd.
Halfway across the sea the ''Atlantis'' strikes an unseen object and receives enough damage to cause massive flooding and doom the ship. The passengers rush into a panic and as the ship sinks into the Atlantic. Dr. von Kammacher saves both Ingigerd and his other lover and then climbs into the last lifeboat. The sinking of the ''Atlantis'' used a real cargo ship that was sunk off New Zealand for a realistic effect. Some sources claim that the sinking ship scenes were inspired by the R.M.S. Titanic sinking but this is not true. It was based on a novel written before that.
After hours adrift a passing freighter rescues the survivors and Dr. vos Kammacher and Ingigerd arrive in New York and she begins her career. Dr. vos Kammacher is impressed by the art gallery and begins to take an interest in fine art. They meet a talented actor named Arthur Floss and he gets Ingigerd into big time show business. Dr. vos Kammacher says goodbye to her and he resumes looking for a cure for his wife.
Dr. vos Kammacher meets a woman named Miss Burns who leads him to a house in the mountains of America and he finally discovers a medicine and returns to Denmark and cures his beloved wife at last. They finally are reunited. An alternate ending was made for the Russian market in which the Doctor dies at the end. It was believed the Russians had a love for sad endings.
