![]() | Atlanta Job Chop Facing a budget shortfall of $140 million, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin, is planning to cut 165 city department jobs. Having laid off 441 city workers as of May 1st, in addition to 778 positions eliminated already, the city now needs $2 million dollars to balance its budget. Franklin proposed to raise property tax, to generate about $12 million, but was denied by City Council. Instead, the mayor was told to shave the budget by $14.6 million dollars. Atlanta had a goal of staffing 2,000 police officers by 2010, but this wave of job cuts, will as Franklin puts it, "directly impact municipal services." Mayor Franklin has yet to announce when the lay offs will take place. http://www.EmploymentCrossing.com |
