'Astronomische Nachrichten' is a publication founded in 1821 by
Heinrich Christian Schumacher which quickly became the world's leading professional publication for the field of
astronomy. Its importance led
American astronomer Benjamin A. Gould in 1850 to found a similar publication, the
Astronomical Journal, for the United States.
Astronomische Nachrichten continues to be published to this day, but now appears in twelve issues per year in English, despite being sponsored by a consortium of the Potsdam Astrophysical Institute, the Astronomical Calculating Institute of Heidelberg, and the Munich University Library. The ISSN is 0004-6337.
The publication today specializes in articles on
solar physics,
extragalactic studies,
cosmology,
geophysics, and instrumentaion for these fields.
