is a
city founded on
November 10,
1940 located in
Hyōgo,
Japan, between the cities of
Osaka and
Kobe. It is known as the
Beverly Hills of Japan.
Great Hanshin earthquake
The south area of the city was largely destroyed in the
Great Hanshin earthquake of
1995, but was rebuilt and transformed into an upper middle class suburban community. The north area of the city suffered comparatively little damage in the
earthquake.
Demographics
As of
2003,the city has an estimated
population of 88,845 and the
density of 4,810.23 persons per
km². The total area is 18.47 km².
Rokurokusou-chō
From end of 19th century,
capitalists and
artists lived on the mountain side of Ashiya, called "Rokurokusou-chou". Now it is an area of residences similar to those in
Mikage, near
Kobe and
Nishinomiya.
Trivia
★ There is a house designed by
Frank Lloyd Wright in Ashiya.
★ The Yodokoh guesthouse, completed in 1924, was a residence of the Yamamura family, founders of the famous
Sake company "Sakuramasamune" (櫻正宗). Now it is the guesthouse of another company.
