'Asaka' (
Japanese: 朝霞市;; -shi) is a
city located in
Saitama,
Japan. It was named (as Asaka town) in 1932 after
Prince Asaka who was an honorary chairman of the
Tokyo Golf Club, which relocated to the area at that time. Asaka town became a city on
March 15,
1967.
As of
2006, the city has an estimated
population of 124,980 and the
density of 6800 persons per
km². The total area is 18.38 km². There have been discussions about merging the city with the neighbouring cities of
Niiza and
Shiki, with no certain agreement.
Sitting just outside the border of Tokyo, many young people feel slighted, being considered "rural people."
