ARVANITIC ALPHABET

The 'Arvanitic alphabet' uses the Greek script to write the Arvanitic language, similar to other older Albanian alphabets which also used the Greek script. There is no standard version; the Greek alphabet is normally used with the addition of the Latin script letters b, d, e and j. The following version is the one used in an Arvanitic translation of the Bible. This version of the script uses the traditional Greek ou ligature (similar to an "8") for the sound [u]. It also uses additional diacritics: a tilde below the letter ε to denote the schwa sound ; and a diaeresis or dot above various letters for palatalised consonants and other consonantal variants that do not exist in Greek.
