While in the Canadian Rockies, Wheeler became interested in climbing. In 1906, together with Elizabeth Parker, he co-founded the Alpine Club of Canada.
The ACC's Arthur O. Wheeler hut is named in his honour.
He is the father of Edward Oliver Wheeler, participated in the first topographical survey of Mount Everest in 1921. He is the grandfather of John Oliver Wheeler, an award-winning Canadian geologist.[2]
