'Arsenic trichloride' is the
chemical compound with the formula
AsCl3. This colourless liquid is a starting reagent for the synthesis of
organoarsenic compounds, such as
triphenylarsine.
Treatment of arsenic(III) oxide with concentrated hydrochloric acid followed by distillation gives AsCl
3. Thus, in contrast to PCl
3, this compound has some stability in the presence of acidic water.

Representative reactions
★ The redistribution of As
2O
3 and AsCl
3 gives the linear
polymer AsOCl.
★ With chloride sources, AsCl
3, forms salts containing the anion [AsCl
4]
−.
