General Moeen U Ahmed [Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh]
General Moeen U Ahmed, ndc, psc, the Chief of Army Staff of Bangladesh Army started his military career from January 1975. His service profile started as Distinguished 'Chief of Army Staff's Cane' holder of the Pioneer Short Service Course-1 from Bangladesh Military Academy. General Moeen has the experience of commanding all echelons and levels of command commensurate to his rank from the company commander to General Officer Commanding of Infantry Division.His service profile is a combination of important command, staff and instructional appointments. He started his instructional career as Weapon Training Officer and then Platoon Commander in Bangladesh Military Academy. He then served as a Brigade Major of an Infantry Brigade. Besides commanding two infantry battalions as Lieutenant Colonel, he also served as a Grade One Staff Officer in Army Headquarters, Military Operations Directorate. As a Colonel, he served as Colonel Staff of an Infantry Division. A veteran instructor, General Moeen has served in Defence Services Command and Staff Collage in three terms as Directing Staff in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Senior Instructor of Army Wing in the rank of Colonel and Chief Instructor in the rank of Brigadier General. General Moeen commanded two Infantry Brigades. He was also the Commandant of School of Infantry and Tactics. In Army Headquarters he served as Military Secretary and Master General of the Ordnance. He then commanded two Infantry Divisions. He had a tour of duty as Defence Adviser of Bangladesh in Pakistan . Before taking over as Chief of Army Staff, he was Chief of General Staff, Bangladesh Army. General Moeen in his charismatic career also served in UNAMIR, Rwanda under United Nations. In his distinguished career he has received two Commendations. They are 'Force Commander's Commendation' for his excellent contribution in UNAMIR and 'US Force's Commendation' for his outstanding contribution in 'OP SEA ANGLES' conducted by US Forces in Bangladesh. The General has attended Intelligence and Security Course in School of Intelligence, Ashford, UK. He is a graduate of Defence Services Command and Staff College, Mirpur, Bangladesh as well as Command and General Staff College, USA. He is a fellow of Harvard University, Boston and Centre for Security Studies, Hawaii, USA. He has also completed National Defence Course from Mirpur, Dhaka . He is a widely traveled person and visited most countries of South Asia, Middle East, Europe and United States of America. General Moeen has numerous military and non military publications in his credit. He has already published a book and engaged in writing his next book.He is married to Naznin Ahmed and they have a son and a daughter named Nihat and Sabrina.General Moeen was promoted to the rank of General on 24 May 2007.

Richard Giragosian is a Washington-based analyst specializing in international relations, with a focus on economics, security and political developments in the former Soviet Union, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region. He is a regular contributor to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) publications, Transitions Online, and the Asia Times Online. He also covers politics, economics and security in the South Caucasus and the Japanese military for the London-based Jane's Information Group. Since 2002, Giragosian has served as a guest lecturer for the John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center & School, U.S. Army, 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, NC. For nine years, Giragosian served as a Professional Staff Member of the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress. As the committee's principal staffer on the former Soviet Union and China, Giragosian was a liaison to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), and the Library of Congress, conducting Congressional hearings and issuing joint reports on international relations for Members of Congress. Giragosian has also written and lectured on developments in international affairs and has participated in select research and consulting projects for the U.S. Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as for NATO, the United Nations, the World Bank, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the U.S. Department of State, and the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He is a member of the Academy of Political Science, the Central Eurasian Studies Association (CESS), the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN), the U.S. Naval Institute and the U.S. Naval War College Foundation. He has a BA in International relations from Providence, Rhode Island.
Programmes for welfare of soldiers and families launched
21/07/2008 Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse has referred to the many programmes launched by the Defense Ministry on behalf of the welfare of war heroes and their families.. On Demand Video 7'O clock Full News 7'O clock Headlines He said they are providing these scholarships to children of members of the Armed Forces and the Police killed, disappeared or disabled in action. It is the duty of the Defense Ministry to help these children to reach a high standard in society without forgetting the services of their parents. Granting of scholarships is one such programme. The Defence Secretary emphasized that they will not terminate their assistance but, will continue to help the children to reach a high standard. Mr. Rajapakse said they were able to remind the society through the "Api Wenuwen Api" concept that war heroes are their brothers and children. He was speaking at a ceremony organized to award scholarships to children of Ranaviru families who succeeded in the 2006 Year Five Scholarship examination. The Defence Ministry handed over 25,000 rupees each to 50 children from the National Defence Fund. This scholarship programme will be continuously implemented. Chief of Defence staff Air Chief Marshal Donald Perera, Army Commander Lt.Gen. Sarath Fonseka, Navy Commander Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, Air Force Chief Air Marshal Roshan Goonatilake and IGP Jayantha Wickramaratne were among the large gathering present.
The Secretary of Defence visits and assesses security of Mannar - 30/08/2008 ආරක්ෂක ලේකම් ගෝඨ‍ාභය රාජපක්ෂ මන්නාරමේ
The Secretary of Defence, Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaksha, accompanied by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Donald Perera and the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda, visited Mannar yesterday-the 30th August 2008, in order to assess the security situation in the area. The itinerary of the visit comprised of visiting and assessing security condition of the area under North Central Naval Command. They had visited the naval detachment at Irrukkalmpiddy- the naval installation closest to un-cleared areas, the naval base in Thalaimannar, Special Boat Squadron and the Rapid Action Boat Squadron. He also declare opened the newly constructed two-storied North Central Naval Command Headquarters in Mannar which was built by the naval personnel in the civil engineering branch of the navy within a short span of time like three months saving a large sum of money. In his visit, the Secretary of Defence, Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakshe, had inspected the Special Boat Squadron and the Rapid Action Boat Squadron which has been imposing a severe threat to the LTTE activities in the Mannar Sea and had also spoken to the troops. The boats and the craft used by the Special Boat Squadron and the Rapid Action Boat Squadron, on board one out of which the Secretary Defence sailed around in his inspection tour, have been constructed by the personnel in the naval engineering branch utilizing indigenous material and expertise. The SBS and Rapid Action Boat Squadron very recently raided the Iranativu Island which was under the presence of LTTE cadres. The naval troops deployed in the North Central Command have successfully been putting in a blockade on the sea route of smuggling weaponry and other war-like materials by LTTE from the narrow sea strip in the Gulf of Mannar.
