The 'Archdiocese of Tuam' was established as a diocese by the
Synod of Rathbreasail 1111; it was promoted to become the metropolitan archdiocese for
Connacht by the
Synod of Kells-Mellifont in
1152 [1]
The see was established at
Tuam, the site of a monastery established by
St Jarlath at some time in the sixth century. Jarlath was accordingly regarded as the founder of the diocese, and became its patron saint.
[2]
It has remained an independent archdiocese in the
Roman Catholic Church.
The
Church Temporalities (Ireland) Act 1834 combined the
Church of Ireland archdiocese was with the
Diocese of Killala and Achonry on
April 13,
1834. On the death of the incumbent archbishop in
1839 Tuam lost its metropolitan status. Consequently it now forms part of the 'United Diocese of Tuam, Killala and Achonry'.
