The 'Roman Catholic Metropolitan Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest' is part of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary. This Hungarian archdiocese is rare (not unique, compare Belgium's primas Mechelen-Brussels) in the sense that it represents two Hungarian cities, 'Esztergom' and the national capital 'Budapest'. The two being one diocese is because in Hungary's early history Esztergom was one of the former capitals of the Hungarian apostolic kingdom (much larger than the present republic – roughly the eastern half of the Habsburg empire).
The diocese was founded in the 10th century. Its name was changed from Archdiocese of Esztergom on May 31, 1993. It had a uniquely prominent status, see under the title of Prince primate.
Its current Archbishop is His Eminence Péter Cardinal Erdő. He received this position when His Eminence dr. László Cardinal Paskai became Archbishop Emeritus.
