Geography

'"Annam"' (''Peaceful/Pacified South'', Chinese: 安南, Hanyu pinyin: Ānnán) is the name that the Chinese gave to the land that constitutes modern-day northern Vietnam. Throughout history, Vietnam never called itself Annam, and thus it is an exonym. Because of the association with Chinese domination and subsequent French colonialism, the term "An Nam" is considered derogatory by many Vietnamese. The term can refer to:

Annam (Chinese Province) - the northern part of modern-day Vietnam when it was ruled as a Chinese province. The name Annam was officially used by the Tang Dynasty since 678 CE. Before that, the province was called Jiaozhi (; pinyin: Jiāozhǐ; Vietnamese: Giao Chỉ) or Jiaozhou (Viet: Giao Châu) by the Chinese. Chinese rule ended in 939.

★ The country of Vietnam before the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945) as it was officially referred to by China. The Vietnamese referred to their country as Đại Việt during the same period.

Annam (French Colony) - a French Protectorate (1874-1954) ruled in name by the Vietnamese Nguyen Dynasty, one of the 5 political entities of French Indochina, consisting of present day central part of Vietnam.
