![]() | Bipartisan Amtrak Bill Passes the House House Passes Oberstar Bill to Rebuild Amtrak Washington DC -- The House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved Congressman Jim Oberstar's bill to invest over $14 billion in Amtrak to upgrade and expand passenger rail service across the nation. The Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act (H.R. 6003) also includes a grant program that would fund new high-speed rail initiatives, similar to the one proposed between Duluth and Minneapolis. The final vote was 311 to 104 Speaking on the House floor today, Oberstar said the previous Republican-led Congress and the Bush administration underfunded Amtrak for years in an attempt to kill the program. "We've seen declining investment in Amtrak's operations and, in the last six years, we have seen at least one bankruptcy budget submitted by the administration," said Oberstar. "But with a combination of Republicans and Democrats looking to the future, we've been able to just keep Amtrak's nose above water over these intervening years. Today, we change that model." |
