Defecation is the act or process by which organisms eliminate solid or semisolid waste material (feces) from the digestive tract via the anus. Humans expel feces with a frequency varying from a few times daily to a few times weekly; sloths can go a week without expelling. Waves of muscular contraction known as peristalsis in the walls of the colon move fecal matter through the digestive tract towards the rectum. Undigested food may also be expelled this way; this process is called egestion. The rectum ampulla (anatomically also: ampulla recti) acts as a temporary storage facility for the unneeded material. As the rectal walls expand due to the material filling it, stretch receptors from the nervous system located in the rectal walls stimulate the desire to defecate. If the urge is not acted upon, the material in the rectum is often returned to the colon where more water is absorbed. If defecation is delayed for a prolonged period the fecal matter may harden, resulting in constipation. |

 | How the Body Works : The Pancreas The Pancreas The pancreas is shown here with the foreground highly magnified to reveal its inner anatomy. Ninety-nine percent of pancreatic tissue is composed of acinar glands, which secrete an alkaline digestive juice into the duodenum via the pancreatic duct to help digest food. The endocrine areas of the pancreas, known as the islets of Langerhans, are composed of two major types of cell. The alpha cells secrete the hormone glucagon, and the beta cells secrete insulin, into the bloodstream. These hormones work in opposition to control the blood glucose level. Insulin promotes the uptake and usage of glucose in the tissues, particularly skeletal muscle and fat, and reduces glucose production in the liver. Glucagon has an anti-insulin effect in the liver, increasing glucose release. The anatomy of the pancreas also includes: the ampulla of the common bile duct: the pancreatic duct, which carries digestive juice containing enzymes to the duodenum; the acini, the exocrine portions of the pancreas which secrete digestive juice into the pancreas; the splenic arteries which conduct oxygenated blood into the pancreas; and the mesenteric veins, which carry deoxygenated blood containing insulin and glucagon away from the pancreas. |

 | Campo degli Amusium - Mongardino (AT) Affioramento pliocenico astigiano (5,3 - 1,8 milioni di anni fa) in cui si possono osservare molteplici specie di conchiglie fossili, purtroppo non in buono stato di conservazione a causa della vicinanza dell'affioramento ad un campo arato. Specie particolarmente abbondante di questo sito è l'Amusium cristatum, con esemplari che il più delle volte conservano intatte entrambe le valve in posizione di vita e conservano le colorazioni originali. L'affioramento segue il canale di scolo delle acque piovane del campo che si vede nel video, e partendo dal basso presenta dapprima alcuni metri di sedimento incongruente trasportato dalle pioggie, poi inizia il primo strato ad argille grigio azzurre di Lugagnano, in cui sono presenti alcuni bivalvi tra cui Glossus humanus, alcuni metri più su vi sono invece le famose sabbie gialle astiane, ricche di macrofossili e microfossili. Più sopra ancora è presente uno strato ricco di ostrea e brachiopodi, in particolare esemplari di Terebratula ampulla. Ma l'emozione più bella che questo affioramento mi ha dato, è il ritrovamento di un dentino di squalo, uscito setacciando i sedimenti! |
