ALLSTON BURR RESIDENT DEAN

The 'Allston Burr Resident Dean', or simply the 'Resident Dean', is the highest-ranking academic officer of an undergraduate House at Harvard College. The title of the position was changed to Resident Dean from 'Allston Burr Senior Tutor' in spring 2006.
The Resident Dean is the academic dean of the House as a division of the College, and the administrator of resident and non-resident tutors. In most circumstances, the Resident Dean holds a doctoral degree in his or her field of study but does not hold tenure as a Professor at Harvard University. Within the academic departments of the University and among the faculty, the Resident Dean is always outranked by the House Master, who is a tenured member of the faculty. Within the House community, the Resident Dean is in charge of academic matters and undergraduate advising. Many Allston Burr Resident Deans are also appointed lecturers within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and teach undergraduate or graduate classes.
All Allston Burr Resident Deans sit on the Administrative Board of Harvard College, and report to the Dean of the College.
