![]() | Tribute to Alexander Schneider 1988 Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, excerpts. While I was a cello student and a medical student I participated in Alexander Schneider's String Seminars. He worked tirelessly, with energy to spare, for hours on end and taught us to never compromise music or ourselves. Always strive for perfection. Always treat music with the greatest respect. I have treated thousands of 'elderly' patients as an emergency physician. I have seen and treated the devastating effects of time on the mind and body. Alexander Schneider breathed music, not air. He was as sharp in his 80's as most people are at the peak of their lives. For those who were fortunate enough to have experienced his passion -- pass on what you learned to your students. You owe it to Sascha. For those who never knew him, he was truly one of the greatest. Eric Roter, M.D. www.ermusic.org |

![]() | Johann Strauss I - Waltz played by String Quintet Johann Strauß I: "Mein Lebenslauf ist Lieb und Lust" or '(The) Course of my Life is Love and Laughter', Op. 263 Alexander Schneider, Felix Galimir and Paul Wolfe, violinist Walter Trampler, violist/Julius Levine, bass-player Wonderful to hear a Strauss waltz played with all the warmth and idiomatic style by the sort of small group of virtuosos heard around Wien in Strauss' day. Mr. Schneider (1908-1993, his photo is last in the slide show), known as Sasha to his freinds, was born in Lithuania and educated in Europe before he settled in America. He was an exponent of the warm and expressive romantic style, of which his playing this, one of his beloved Viennese waltzes, is a fine example. He left over 100 recording as a member of the Budapest Quartet, conductor at the Marlboro Festival, the Brandenburg Ensemble, and such, but his most lasting legacy is the many students and musicians he touched. "For me, my purpose is to get young people to learn how to make music....When you make music, it has to come from your heart, from your soul, or it has no meaning. It's an extraordinary experience when I see the results. They produce a sound a professional orchestra couldn't: a love of music." |

![]() | Hebrides Overture Mendelsshon - Casals cond. (1-2) Fingals's Cave Overture Pablo Casals conducts Festival Casals 1970s Alexander Schneider first violin Jose "Pepito" Figueroa (behind Schneider) Henry Hutchinson, back row of violins. Casals was a great conductor! In his old age he produced wonderful recordings (Beethoven 7th, Mendelsshon "Italian" symphony #4, etc.) In this recording the internal details are lovingly and beatifully done. There is no need to rush things! Awesome!! Last part missing in this old tape. As a "filler" for the missing part I used my first LP record of this great Overture (Sir Adrian Boult) Note: The wind section may include member(s) of the former NBC Symphony Orchestra (Arturo Toscanini, cond.) |
