ALEXANDER DEWITT


'Alexander DeWitt' (April 2, 1798 - January 13, 1879) was a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts.
Born in New Braintree, Massachusetts,, DeWitt pursued an academic course.
He engaged in textile manufacturing in Oxford.
He served as member of the State house of representatives 1830-1836.
He served in the State senate in 1842, 1844, 1850, and 1851.
He served as member of the State constitutional convention in 1853.
DeWitt was elected as a Free-Soil candidate to the Thirty-third Congress and reelected as a candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1853-March 3, 1857).
He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1856 to the Thirty-fifth Congress.
He resumed the manufacture of textiles.
He died in Oxford, Massachusetts, January 13, 1879.
He was interred in South Cemetery.
