ALAMO, TEXAS
'Alamo,' nicknamed the "Land of Two Summers," is a U.S. city located in an irrigated area of southern Hidalgo County, Texas. Incorporated in 1924 and named for the Alamo Land and Sugar Company. Abundant vegetables, citrus and winter resort-retirement areas; also one of Valley's gateways to Mexico via U.S. 281 and Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas. The population was 14,760 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.8 km² (5.7 mi²), all land.
As of the census of 1900, there were 14,760 people, 4,621 households, and 3,826 families residing in the city. The population density was 996.3/km² (2,580.8/mi²). There were 6,208 housing units at an average density of 419.0/km² (1,085.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 83.61% White, 0.21% African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.09% Asian(including Russian, Ukranean, Aserbajan), 13.73% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 78.10% of the population.
There were 4,621 households out of which 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.2% were non-families. 15.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.19 and the average family size was 3.57.
In the city the population was spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 22.9% from 25 to 44, 17.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 93.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $23,928, and the median income for a family was $24,827. Males had a median income of $17,476 versus $14,683 for females. The per capita income for the city was $10,564. About 24.9% of families and 32.4% of the population were below the poverty line, including 48.0% of those under age 18 and 12.9% of those age 65 or over.
Much of Alamo resides in the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo Independent School District. Another portion resides in the Donna Independent School District.
