Philadelphia Air Traffic Control
30 minutes of footage from Philadelphia TRACON sped up in 3 minutes. Compiled in that 30 minutes is a runway switch from 27R to 9R including holds which can be seen at the bottom of the video. Due to the decision to do it during the heaviest arrival push. Holding was nessecary both in the north and south until all 27L departures were finally released and only a few aircraft were left on the 27R final before aircraft could start being released from the holds and recieve vectors for runway 9R. Just a note for the people who don't know anything about Air Traffic Control, first off.. No controllers they are not the people on the ground waving glow sticks. Second.. No, pilots just dont control themselves into or out of an airport. Next time you fly, don't forget the hundreds to thousands of people coordinating for your flights safe journey. No matter really where you are in the US, your flight will always be talking to someone. They do it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The system is never closed... BTW, each one of those green targets contains on average 120 people. Food for thought...
Real Air Traffic Control
A glimpse of a real air traffic control facility. Whenever you fly, folks like those shown in here are watching over you, making sure you arrive safely. It's a vital profession and, as you will see, requires a lot of concentration, skill, and judgement. I shot the video at Miami Tower on a class tour and edited it together, dropping in explanations for what is shown on screen. It starts off with their training simulator, then moves on to the "real deal".
