![]() | HENAAC 2008 Award Ceremony Intro www.henaac.org History HENAAC was established in 1989 as a means of identifying, honoring, and documenting the contributions of outstanding Hispanic American science, engineering, technology and math professionals. Corporations, government agencies, academic institutions, the military, and the business community-at-large have submitted thousands of nominees over the last 19 years for this very prestigious recognition. The HENAAC acronym stood for the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference. This important conference set the precedent for excellence in engineering and science and was run out of Baltimore, Maryland under Career Communications Group. In 1996 HENAAC became a 501(c) 3 educational programs non-profit organization, under the leadership of the founder and current Chairman, Ray Mellado. This new classification allowed HENAAC to develop additional educational programs beyond the conference. In 2000, HENAAC introduced the College Bowl, an innovative, competitive two-day workshop for college students preparing to enter engineering careers. In 2001, HENAAC launched Viva Technology, our K-12 educational program designed to introduce pre-college students to the exciting careers in science, engineering and technology. This same year, our organization launched its Scholars program, providing scholarships to college students pursuing engineering and science careers. Since then, HENAAC has awarded over $919,000 in scholarships to college students from across the country. In addition to these programs HENAAC puts on a yearly National Career Conference and Awards Show, provides Travel grants to college students, conducts Research and has a Hispanic Hall of Fame exhibit. The HENAAC Board of Directors voted in 2005 to drop the use of the acronym and changed the official name and tag line to HENAAC, Promoting Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Assisting HENAAC to expand its mission to encompass a wider scope of services are the distinguished members of its board of directors and executive committees, many of whom are captains of industry and recognized authorities in their field. Over the last decade HENAAC has intensified its focus on researching, developing and implementing successful and nationally acclaimed technology-related educational programs. The effectiveness of HENAAC programs has helped forge long-lasting partnerships with world-renown universities, with national and international corporations and government agencies. |
![]() | Mnwrldsintrprt #11 Many-worlds interpretation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Relative_state - - The many-worlds interpretation could be one possible way to resolve the paradoxes that one would expect to arise if time travel turns out to be permitted by physics (permitting closed timelike curves and thus violating causality) . Entering the past would itself be a quantum event causing branching, and therefore the timeline accessed by the time traveller simply would be another timeline of many. In that sense, it would make the Novikov self-consistency principle unnecessary. Many worlds in literature and science fiction The many-worlds interpretation (and the somewhat related concept of possible worlds) have been associated to numerous themes in literature, art and science fiction. Some of these stories or films violate fundamental principles of causality and relativity, and are extremely misleading since the information-theoretic structure of the path space of multiple universes (that is information flow between different paths) is very likely extraordinarily complex. Also see Michael Clive Price's FAQ referenced in the external links section below where these issues (and other similar ones) are dealt with more decisively. Another kind of popular illustration of many worlds splittings, which does not involve information flow between paths, or information flow backwards in time considers alternate outcomes of historical events. According to many worlds, most of the historical speculations entertained within the alternate history genre are realised in parallel universes. ![]() | Jo Gambi Jo entered the Guinness World Records for the fastest female ascent of the Seven Summits. Jo also is the second British woman to ever climb Everests North Ridge. In 2005 Jo Gambi and her husband, Rob, became the first couple to both climb the Seven Summits and ski to the North and South Poles. Jo was also the first female and Rob the first Australian to achieve this. Remarkably they unwittingly achieved these records not only while Rob was in remission from his second bout of cancer, but also in spite of facing death along the way, while stranded high in the Himalaya. With nothing more than Rob and Jos characteristic passion and determination, they also succeeded in completing the Seven Summits in record time. Jos book Holding On a story of love and survival was successfully launched in the UK and internationally in 2006 with substantial media interest, and Jo is now in demand for speaking both at home and abroad. As a talented and keen photographer, Jo has captured images from some of the most remote and wild places around the globe and in addition to contributing to the prestigious Nikon Owner Magazine, she is currently working on her second, photographic book. At an early age Jos passion for the outdoors developed on family holidays where sailing, camping and hiking were the norm. Although Jo competed successfully throughout her school years in numerous athletics disciplines, she excelled in her academic studies too, going on to be awarded the highest grade and a first class honours degree in Business Management and Clothing, as well as a Diploma in Biblical Studies. After this Jo was accepted on the acclaimed graduate management programme at Marks and Spencer which led to her career as a Product Technologist in the mens and womens wear buying teams. Jos university summer vacations saw her passion for travel and adventure develop as she worked overseas extensively in Kenya, Romania, Bolivia, US, Greece and Malaysia. With roles varying from sailing instructor and lifeguard to community, hospital and church based projects. In 1997, Jos career changed direction as she wanted to pursue a profession more dedicated towards helping people something she had always enjoyed throughout her ten years of church youth work. After gaining a degree in Physiotherapy she worked at University College London Hospitals (UCLH), one of the countrys leading NHS trusts as well as working privately for the London Welsh Rugby Club and teaching Clinical Pilates. Jos warm, gregarious personality combined with her dynamic and engaging speaking style enable her to inspire, challenge and motivate any audiences. She not only brings fascinating insights as a result of her experiences, but her reflections both as a female and a wife are also unique. Whilst Jos achievements may seem out of reach for most people, audiences are often delighted and relieved to discover she is from a very ordinary background without any of the potential advantages of a privileged upbringing or education. By tenaciously overcoming personal obstacles, Jo has discovered that so many of lifes answers are within reach of us all. Jo loves the opportunity speaking brings her to inspire people to be the best they can be, maintain perspective, and passionately pursue their dreams. Jo now lives in west London with her husband Rob, who is now an MD for UBS Global Asset Management. REFERENCES Jos talk was excellent and inspiring. It dealt honestly with confronting very difficult situations, and how setting clear goals allied with determination, teamwork and a passion to succeed can make al the difference.
