It was nominated for an
Academy Award for
Best Actor in a Leading Role (Anthony Franciosa).
The movie was a rarity for its time in its frank depiction of the impact of heroin addiction. However artistic sources are not absent if one thinks already in the Homer's Odyssey we find the loto eaters as addicts. The plot is set in a flat of a council house. Johnny Pope is a soldier who comes back from the war of Korea. There, moreover, he has had a particular shock. He meets his wife Celia who is in pregnancy, and his brother Polo. His father John Sr. lives far away, from outside the family as usual. His brother will mark the story out wth an exuberant involvement. People will have to face local crime, because John is addict. People's trouble has really an older cause and the fiction develops in inner and introspective ways.
This was
William Hickey's film debut.
