![]() | Flash Gordon Movie TV Commercial-1980 Family Guy Reference This movie was hyped as the next Star Wars. But Luke and the gang had nothing to worry about, as this movie was awful! This commercial really captures how bad it is. The recent Family Guy episode where Stewie and Brian travel back to 1939 made a reference to the Birdmen from the film, and there is a quick glimpse of one in this ad. ![]() | Chungking Mansions Chungking Mansions is a building located at 36-44 Nathan Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong. The building is well known as nearly the cheapest accommodation in Hong Kong with a single bed of US $8 one night. Though the building is supposedly residential, it is made up of many independent low-budget hotels, shops, and other services. The strange atmosphere of this building is sometimes called by some "the scent of Kowloon's Walled City". Chungking Mansions features a labyrinth of guesthouses, curry restaurants, African bistros, clothing shops, sari stores, and foreign exchange offices. It often acts as a large gathering place for some of the ethnic minorities in Hong Kong, particularly Indians, Middle Eastern people, Nepalese, Sri Lankans, Bangladeshis, Nigerians, Europeans, Americans, Pakistanis, and many other peoples of the world. The building was completed in 1961, at which time Chinese residents predominated. Now, after more than four decades of use, there are an estimated 4,000 people living in the Mansions. Chungking Mansions is 17 stories tall and consists of 5 blocks, A, B, C, D, and E. There are two elevators in each block, one of which serves even-numbered floors, the other one odd-numbered floors; there is often a queue for this lift. The price of a flat in the Chungking Mansions ranged from HK$1,000,000 to HK$2,000,000 as of August 2006. While the Chungking Mansions are nominally intended for residential use, there is a large variety of commercial establishments in the building. Chungking Mansions contains the largest number of guesthouses in Hong Kong in one building, with 1980 rooms in total. The rent ranges from HK$60 to HK$380 per day (as of 2006). Since it offers some of the cheapest rates in town, it has become a legendary haunt for backpackers and budget travellers. The age of the building, the diverse ownership, and management structure are the cause of the building's reputation for being a fire trap. The unsanitary conditions, security, ancient electrical wiring, block staircases contribute to the hazards. On February 21, 1988, a fire broke out in the building. A Danish tourist who was trapped inside was killed. The fire in this building, as well as a blaze in a similar building provoked a review of rules and regulations concerning public safety. CUHK anthropologist Prof. Gordon Mathews revealed that there are people from at least 120 different nationalities who have passed through Chungking Mansions in the past year. With this lively mix of guest workers, mainlanders, local Chinese, tourists and backpackers, the Chungking neighbourhood is one of the most culturally diverse locations in Hong Kong. Chungking Mansions was elected as the "Best Example of Globalization in Action" by TIME Magazine in its annual feature The Best of Asia, although racial tensions are known to boil over occasionally. It is also known to be a centre of drugs, and a refuge for petty criminals, scammers, and illegal immigrants. For example, in a Police swoop in June 1995, about 1,750 people were questioned, 45 men and seven women from various Asian and African countries were arrested on suspicion of offences including failing to produce proof of identity, overstaying, using forged travel documents, possessing equipment for forging documents, and possessing dangerous drugs. In "Operation Sahara" in 1996, 52 men and seven women from 14 countries were arrested for violating immigration regulations. |
![]() | Iran claims new Israel-range missile tests http://www.alisanaei.com TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Iran announced Wednesday that it successfully test-fired a "Sajil" missile -- a new generation of surface-to-surface missiles -- according to state-run media reports. A photo released by an Iranian news agency shows a missile test at an undisclosed location. A photo released by an Iranian news agency shows a missile test at an undisclosed location. Iran did not say when the missile was test-fired, but said it happened in the presence of Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Mostafa Mohammad Najjar. "The two-stage missile uses combined solid fuel and has a high-launching speed," Najjar said, according to the state-run IRNA news agency. He said it had a range of about 1,200 miles, which could easily reach arch-foe Israel and even travel as far as southeastern Europe, The Associated Press reported. The United States restated its objection to such tests, saying they violated Iran's obligations under United Nations Security Council resolutions. Iran's state-run television network showed video of the apparent test launch. Najjar said the test showed Iran's capability to defend its territory, according to IRNA. Najjar emphasized the test launch had been planned since last year and had nothing to do with recent international and regional developments, according to the semi-official Fars news agency. U.S. National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said the test launch was "completely inconsistent with Iran's obligations to the world." "The Iranian regime only furthers the isolation of the Iranian people from the international community when it engages in this sort of activity," Johndroe said Wednesday morning. "Iran should also refrain from further missile tests if they truly seek to gain the trust of the world. The Iranian regime should stop the development of ballistic missiles, which could be used as a delivery vehicle for a potential nuclear weapon, immediately." advertisement The reported test launch comes amid back and forth talks between Iran and Western powers on Tehran's controversial nuclear program. U.S. officials have cast doubt on the success of past missile test launches by Iran, including a rocket launch in August and a series of missile tests the previous month. Source: CNN |

![]() | NASA - Air Safety Report Controversy - VOA Story American news media are reporting that a survey of pilots by the U.S. government found that safety problems involving air carriers happen more frequently than previously known. The reports say the space agency, NASA, conducted the survey, but did not publish the results over fears they could affect public confidence in air travel. Some lawmakers are accusing the government of trying to suppress the results because they might hurt airline profits -- a charge NASA firmly denies. The reports say NASA spent three years developing the questionnaire and three years interviewing 24,000 pilots. But after completing the $8.5 million survey last year, the space agency allegedly refused to publish its results and asked everyone associated with the project to delete their files. The survey reportedly uncovered numerous safety problems from near misses, runway interference, to engine failures. A NASA document obtained by Associated Press says, "The release of the data could affect public confidence and hurt the commercial welfare of air carriers." But Democratic Party Congressman Brad Miller says that is not for the space agency to decide. "It is part of NASA's job to make sure aviation is safe. It is not NASA's job to make airline travelers think that everything is fine or to protect airline profits." Congress has launched a formal investigation. Democratic Congressman Bart Gordon says NASA has been ordered to keep all of its data. "This is a matter of safety," he said. "We need to know that information, the American public needs to know that information." The Federal Aviation Administration says it played no role in trying to suppress the information. FAA acting administrator Robert Sturgell stated, "We are always interested in safety data and the analysis and mining of aviation safety data." NASA administrators have assured Congress the data will not be destroyed, but the agency says it will determine what information, if any, can be released. |
![]() | Sample of Work Andrew Benson graduated from Arizona State University in 2006 where he studied Art History and Religion. While working as staff photographer at the Arizona State Press Magazine, Arizona State's student publication, he fell in love with journalism and its impact. One of his cover photos caused national news after a backer of the university took offense to his black and white profile of a pierced breast, done for an article on piercing. This led to the university president threatening to shut down the publication. Standing by the decision to run the photo, the publication secured an ethics award for journalism and made a solid claim against censorship at state universities. Since 2004 he has worked in Film/Video Production as a Producer and Coordinator with clients such as the United Way, Discovery, CBS, and the BBC. He is ambitious and learning from the best in the business. In addition to Producing and Coordinating, Benson has done numerous public art projects, including public theatre; created the Urban Art Vehicle (UAV), a mobile canvas for propaganda and artists work, featured in Adbusters; founded and directed Produce, an art space in Phoenix; as well, he has been curator of art shows in Phoenix. Working as a freelancer has allowed Benson to travel extensively through the US, Europe, the Middle East and South America where experiences have helped shape his global conscious. Benson's work as an artist is constantly evolving but the mission remains constant: create didactic work which fuels dialogue and growth, both for himself and others. His mentality is in part inspired by Gordon Parks who talked about using his camera as a weapon in pointing his lens at the atrocities of his time-the 1950's-60's-and letting the images pierce the minds of viewers resulting in empathy and change. Andrew Benson lives in Phoenix, AZ and is 24. |
