'''A Curious Feeling''' is the debut solo album from
Genesis keyboardist Tony Banks. It was released in 1979 on
Charisma Records.
Banks planned this to be a concept album based on the book ''
Flowers for Algernon'' by
Daniel Keyes. However, due to the fact the a musical inspired by the book had just opened in London, Banks decided to change the story a little.
The finished story was of a boy who makes a pact an undefined spirit (probably his
doppelgänger), so that as long as he would never fall in love he would become extremely intelligent. As an adult, he has reached genius-level and has forgotten all about the pact. Finally, he falls in love, and loses his memory and high-level intelligence completely.
The instrumental piece "From the Undertow" was used in the 1978 British movie ''The Shout'', for which Banks (along with Mike Rutherford) composed the incidental music. No soundtrack of the movie is available. It also has a melodic content and tone related to the song "Undertow" from
...And Then There Were Three... by
Genesis.
Cover design is by Hothouse, and the cover painting is ''Wuluwait - Boatman of the Dead'' by Australian artist
Ainslie Roberts.
