15 Pirouettes
For the record: A. I think whipping the arms looks way cooler than stiff ol' "proper" ballet" preparation. B. Nooooobody's foot stays in one place when you do multiple pirouettes. Feel free to watch Baryshnikov's pirouettes in White Nights. C. Yes, these are "jazz" pirouettes. All a pirouette requires is turning on one foot. Which I did. My way. A bunch of times. So many haters. So little kowledge. So little love. S'all good. I just "keep it movin" for the people who like to enjoy life instead of hating. Nick Lowe: Heart Of The City: Stiff's Live Stiffs Tour (All-Hands-On-Deck Finale: 1977)
http://visualguidanceltd.blogspot.com/2008/11/nick-lowe-live-stiffs-tour-heart-of.html Formerly an amateur boxer in east London, Jake Riviera, with $400 of Lee Brilleaux's (Dr. Feelgood) money, co-founded Stiff Records, never missing a shameless opportunity for a publicity stunt! Stiff revived the 45 picture sleeve, as well as giant posters (60x40 monstrosities, designed by Barney Bubbles), which became an industry standard. In addition, Riviera's quirky, provocative slogans e.g.("If it Ain't Stiff, It Ain't Worth a Fuck"), matched his relentless and volatile personality which shaped the label. STIFFSLIVESTIFFSLIVESTIFFSLIVE In 1976, with Dave Robinson, one of the first major undertakings of the new label was to reinvent the package tour with their own Live Stiffs tour, featuring several of their best acts, including Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, Ian Dury, Wreckless Eric and Larry Wallis. The tour was to consist of 24 UK shows, with each act playing a 30 minute set and the lineup changing nightly to give everyone their fair due. Starting in High Wycombe, the Live Stiffs tour opened with Nick Lowe, dressed in a neon green suit decorated with question marks. Despite the air of competition, the tour was markedly collaborative, with each band sharing not just equipment, but also musicians. Both Larry Wallis and the Attractions' Pete Thomas played backup for Nick Lowe; frontman Ian Dury played drums for Wreckless Eric; and both Nick Lowe and Pete Thomas in turn backed Larry Wallis. To close each show, the entire bunch would get on stage together to perform the tour's anthem, Ian Dury's "Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll." On October 18 at the Lyceum, the show was recorded for Live album--the entire group was rounded up on stage for the final song. Costello remembers, "I was usually somewhere else when the finale was going on, but I had my arm twisted at the Lyceum. I was extremely drunk." Though financially the tour took a loss, its main success was in helping to launch the career of Ian Dury, who in turn saved the fledgling label. The impressive Live Stiffs LP and video now serves as a time capsule of the incendiary performances of Stiff's road-weary musicians as they finished their grueling, sodden UK tour. *On 14 August 1976, Lowe's "So It Goes"/ "Heart of the City", a publisher's demo recorded for around £50, became the first Stiff 45 and made single of the week in two of the five music weeklies. **live stiffs trivia: "Pump it Up"-- was written in reaction to the excesses of the Stiffs Live Tour. Ian Dury's "New Boots and Panties!!" Despite popular misconception is not credited to 'Ian Dury & The Blockheads,' as the band was not formed until the Stiff's Live Stiffs tour some months after its recording, and two of the band do not play on the album. ***Where are they now? Terry Williams joined Dire Straits and now owns a blues club in the UK. Billy Bremner hooked up with The Pretenders for a short time. Dave Edmunds recently survived a quadruple bypass operation and has resumed touring. After divorcing Nick, Carlene Carter married another bass player, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Howie Epstein, who died in 2003. She was arrested for heroin possession in 2001. THE REAL MCKENZIES on CAPITAL CHAOS 2003
THE REAL MCKENZIES @ The Colonial Theater in Sacramento, CA on the 2003 Fat Wreck Tour also on the bill were RISE AGAINST, FABULOUS DISASTERS & MAD CADDIES. Real McKenzies is a Scottish-influenced Celtic punk band founded in Vancouver, Canada in 1992. All, or most, of the band members have Scottish heritage. In addition to writing and performing original music, Real McKenzies resurrect traditional Scottish songs, giving them a new punk-influenced sound. They include bagpipes in all of their studio albums and at most of their concerts. Lead singer Paul McKenzie leads a high-energy act that tours extensively, including an eight-month, 23-country tour in a van. On some of these tours, they have shared stages with Rancid, DragStrip Riot, NOFX, Flogging Molly, The Misfits, Metallica, Voodoo Glow Skulls and even Shane MacGowan. Their songs have been used in beer commercials and featured in video games such as Tony Hawk Underground. http://www.myspace.com/therealmckenziess The modern-day Celtic bards known as The Real McKenzies hail from Vancouver, BC and are a punk band deeply rooted in their Scottish heritage with a sound best described as the Sex Pistols meet Scottish folk legend Robbie Burns. The Scottish term Ceilidh (pronounced kee-lee), is the main reason why the Real McKenzies formed and their chief inspiration. Ceilidh, according to the McKenzies, is a Gaelic word meaning "A wicked party which carries on for days". Founded by frontman Paul McKenzie in 1994, he cites his family as another motivating factor, "As a lad, my parents and grandparents would dress me up in a kilt and make me sing and dance to traditional Scottish music. Starting a Scottish punk band is my way of getting revenge!" You're probably wondering how it is that group of Canadians can rightly rollick and roam the countryside in the name of Scotland. Paul McKenzie offers an explanation, "A great many Scots immigrated to Canada. Ya see, the Scottish went north and the Irish went south...as they often do." The Real McKenzies have just finished up recording their latest full length 10,000 Shots, at San Francisco's esteemed Motor Studios with Fat Mike behind the knobs. 10,000 Shots is their first album for Fat Wreck Chords and it follows up two full lengths on Honest Don's: Loch'd & Loaded and Oot & Aboot. No doubt about it though, this is their best sounding record thus far and it always helps to get these drunks in a proper studio with someone urging them along. Guitarist Dirty Kurt clearly explains, "We don't wanna cut into our drinkin' time, so we spend as little time as possible in the studio." Makes perfect sense to us. The Real McKenzies are proven warriors of the road, having toured North America six times and Europe (where they draw huge crowds) five times. They've toured and played shows with Rancid, Shane MacGowan, NOFX, Flogging Molly, The Bay City Rollers (yep, it's true), The Briefs, and many more. Always touring, always drinking, and always rockin', the haggis-fueled McKenzie clan is hearty bunch that desires only to bring their brand of Celtic punk rock to every remote corner of the globe. Dirty Kurt puts it best, "We've been through tons of members, tons of broken bones, and tons of beer." Their unending tour schedule would make William Wallace himself exhausted. Always performing in full Highland regalia, the Real McKenzies are a true credit to their ancestors. For their live show they don kilts, high stockings, and sporrans (those weird belt thingies). And you really have to see the size of their bagpipe player's mohawk to truly appreciate it! Okay okay, so it's not entirely traditional, but their live show is hands down the rowdiest punk show this side of Glasgow. These inclusive punks see to it that everyone has a good time and a stiff drink in their hand. Preferably Scotch.. http://www.thepunksite.com/interviews.php?page=realmckenzies
