'59th Street' is a street in the
New York City borough of
Manhattan. It runs east-west, from
York Avenue to the
West Side Highway, with a discontinuity between
Ninth Avenue/Columbus Avenue and
Eighth Avenue/
Central Park West for the
Time Warner Center. Although it is bi-directional for most of its length, the section of 59th Street between Ninth and
Tenth (Amsterdam) Avenues is
one-way, westbound. At
Second Avenue, 59th Street continues onto the
Queensboro Bridge, which is often referred to as the '59th Street Bridge'.
59th Street forms the border between
Midtown Manhattan and
Uptown Manhattan. It bisects
Columbus Circle and forms the southern boundary of
Central Park between
Fifth Avenue and
Central Park West. The portion of the street below Central Park is signed as
Central Park South.
North of 59th Street, the Manhattan neighborhoods of the
Upper West Side and
Upper East Side continue on either side of Central Park. On the West Side, Manhattan's numbered avenues are renamed north of 59th Street, with
Eighth Avenue renamed Central Park West,
Ninth Avenue becoming Columbus Avenue,
Tenth Avenue renamed as Amsterdam Avenue and
Eleventh Avenue becoming West End Avenue.
