![]() | Mozart Ave Verum Corpus Mozart wrote Ave Verum Corpus in June 1791 while visiting his wife Constanze in Baden where she was having treatment for her health. Mozart adored Constanze and shortly after returning to Vienna alone, leaving her in Baden, he wrote her deeply moving letters saying how much he missed her: "You cannot imagine how slowly time goes when you are not with me. There is a sense of emptiness, which hurts, a certain longing which cannot be satisfied. When I remember how childishly merry we were in Baden, and what mournful, tedious hours I pass here, my work gives me no pleasure because it is not possible as was my want to chat a few words with you when stopping for a moment". To his father Leopold, who disapproved of his son marrying Constanze, Mozart simply stated in 1781: "I love her and she loves me." Wolfgang Amade (as he usually referred to himself) and Constanze had 6 children: Raimund, Karl Thomas, Johann, Theresia, Anna Maria and Franz Xaver, only two of whom survived infancy, Karl Thomas (1784-1858) and Franz Xaver (1791-1844). Many years after Mozart's early death Constanze was asked why she never had children in her second marriage (Constanze outlived Mozart by over 50 years) to which she replied that Mozart was "my one true passionate love". ![]() | 7 Which of Mozart's overtures is the very best? All are conducted by Neville Marriner with the ASMF Idomeneo Overture Idomeneo, re di Creta ossia Ilia e Idamante (Italian: Idomeneo, King of Crete, or, Ilia and Idamante; usually referred to simply as Idomeneo, K. 366) is an Italian opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The libretto was adapted by Giambattista Varesco from a French text by Antoine Danchet, which had been set to music by André Campra as Idoménée in 1712. Mozart and Varesco were commissioned in 1780 by Karl Theodor, Elector of Bavaria for a court carnival. He probably chose the subject, though it might have been Mozart.[1] It was first performed at the Cuvilliés Theatre of the Residenz in Munich on January 29, 1781. Written when the composer was 24, Idomeneo was Mozart's first mature opera seria, and with it he demonstrated his mastery of orchestral color, accompanied recitatives, and melodic line. In certain respects (e.g., the choirs), however, this opera is still an experimental drama, resulting more in a sequence of sets than in a well developed plot. Mozart also had to fight with the mediocre author of the libretto, the court chaplain Varesco, making large cuts and changes, even down to specific words and vowels disliked by the singers (too many "i"s in "rinvigorir").[2] Idomeneo was performed three times at Munich, and later in 1781 Mozart considered revising it to harmonise it with Gluck's style. This would have meant a bass Idomeneus and a tenor Idamantes, but nothing came of it. A concert performance was given in 1786 at the Auersperg palace in Vienna, and as well as changing Idamantes from a castrato to a tenor, Mozart wrote some new music and cut out other parts. In the late 1920s, Richard Strauss began working on a revised version of Idomeneo. This version premiered in 1930 and boasted a completely different libretto by Lothar Wallerstein. Strauss cut much of Mozart's score replacing it with some his own compositions. He also rearranged the order of the musical numbers and changed name of the character of princess Electra to the priestess Ismene. Critics have noted that Strauss' additions to the opera contain an odd blend of the classical style of composition and Strauss' own characteristic sound. In 1984, the Mostly Mozart Festival presented Strauss' version of Mozart's Idomeneo with Jerry Hadley in the title role, Delores Ziegler as Idamantes, and Alessandra Marc as Ismene.[3] Today Idomeneo is part of the standard operatic repertoire. There are several recordings of it (see below), and it is regularly performed |

Additionally, the Los Angeles metropolitan area is home to nearly 12.9 million[3] people who hail from all over the globe and speak 224 different languages. Los Angeles is the seat of Los Angeles County, the most populous and one of the most diverse counties[4] in the United States. Its inhabitants are known as "Angelenos" (IPA: /ændʒəˈlinoʊz/). Los Angeles was founded September 4, 1781, by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve as El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de la Porciúncula (The Village of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of Porziuncola). It became a part of Mexico in 1821, following its independence from Spain. In 1848, at the end of the Mexican-American War, Los Angeles and California were purchased as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, thereby becoming part of the United States; Mexico retained the territory of Baja California. Los Angeles was incorporated as a municipality on April 4, 1850, five months before California achieved statehood. Los Angeles is one of the world's centers of culture, technology, media, business, and international trade. It is home to renowned institutions covering a broad range of professional and cultural fields, and is one of the most substantial economic engines within the United States. Los Angeles leads the world in producing popular entertainment — such as motion picture, television, and recorded music — which forms the base of its international fame and global status.State California County Los Angeles County Settled September 4, 1781 Incorporated April 4, 1850.The Los Angeles coastal area was first settled by the Tongva (or Gabrieleños) and Chumash Native American tribes hundreds of years ago. The first Europeans arrived in 1542 under Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, a Portuguese-born explorer who claimed the area as the City of God for the Spanish Empire. However, he continued with his voyage and did not establish a settlement.[5] The next contact would not come until 227 years later, when Gaspar de Portola, along with Franciscan missionary Juan Crespí, reached the present site of Los Angeles on August 2, 1769. Crespí noted that the site had the potential to be developed into a large settlement.[6] In 1771, Franciscan friar Junípero Serra built the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel near Whittier Narrows, in what is now called San Gabriel Valley.[7] In 1777, the new governor of California, Felipe de Neve, recommended to Antonio María de Bucareli y Ursúa, viceroy of New Spain that the site noted by Juan Crespí be developed into a pueblo. The town was founded on September 4, 1781, by a group of forty-four settlers known as "los Pobladores". They were escorted by four Spanish colonial soldiers and their families. It was named El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles del Río de Porciúncula (The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels on the Porciúncula River).[8] These pueblo settlers came from the common Hispanic culture that had emerged in northern Mexico among a racially-mixed society. Two-thirds of the settlers were mestizo or mulatto, and therefore, had African and Indian ancestry. More importantly, they were intermarrying.[9] The settlement remained a small ranch town for decades, but by 1820 the population had increased to about 650 residents.[10] Today, the pueblo is commemorated in the historic district of Los Angeles Pueblo Plaza and Olvera Street, the oldest part of Los Angeles.[11] New Spain achieved its independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821, and the pueblo continued as a part of Mexico. During Mexican rule, Governor Pío Pico, made Los Angeles Alta California's regional capitol. Mexican rule ended during the Mexican--American War. |
![]() | Main-Danube Canal Eckersmuehien Lock Main-Danube Canal Eckersmuehlen Lock In 793 the Frankish emperor Charlemagne (748-814) began to construct a canal between Swabian Rezat, a small river belonging to the Rhine's river system, and the Altmuhl, a tributary of the Danube. However, work had to be given up three years later due to technical problems King Ludwig I of Bavaria (1781-1858) started a new attempt at building a Canal in 1835. The 108 mile-long "Ludwigskanal" was to connect the Main River at Bamburg with the Danube at Kelheim near Regensburg. Although the canal was successfully completed in 1846, it was an economic failure right from the start. With its more than 100 locks and its small, slow vessels it was no match for the railroad, Which had been introduced to Germany only a few years earlier. The Ludwigskanal was officially closed down in 1950. As early as 1892, there were claims that a new, larger canal ought to be built to replace the Ludwigskanal. Construction began in 1960. The Northern stretch o the Canal between Bamberg and Nuremberg was completed in 1972. Building the Southern part of the waterway between Nuremberg and the city of Kelheim near Regensburg turned out to be a much more difficult endeavor. As the terrain is much hillier, construction was more difficult and more locks were needed. Moreover, public opinion began to change with the emergence of the environmentalist movement in the late 1970s and early 1980s. People grew afraid of the gigantic construction project and became skeptical about its negative effects on the environment. Work was stopped in 1982, but after an agreement to give 20% of the construction budget to environment projects the canal was completed in 1992 Camera; JVC Hard Disk Camcorder Tours by Vantage 1-800-322-6677 |
![]() | Scarborough Settler's Lament A beautifully written song by someone a long time ago. It appears that the song has been attributed to many authors as well as it's melody. The Penguin Book of Canadian Folk Songs attributes the lyrics to Sandy Glendenning circa 1840 and states the tune was by Fowke. According to the notes on the The Tannahill Weavers album "Land Of Light," the lyrics were by Alexander Glendinning and the tune is William Marshall's Miss Admiral Gordon's Strathspey (1781). It also states that Robert Burns used the tune for I Love My Jean. There is some suggestion that Miss Gordon was, in turn, a reconstruction of the song tune The Lowlands of Holland (Scots Musical Museum 1788). Although Lowlands was published later, it was supposed to have been in a manuscript collection of an earlier date. However, the manuscript was lost and the earlier date cannot be verified.* The tune is also known as Scarborough Settler's Lament. Scarborough is now a borough of Toronto. The Highland Clearances were as great a tragedy for the Highlands as Culloden. Thousands of crofters were forcibly removed from their land by the Highland chieftans. Many settled in Canada. |
