"'(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover'" was a popular wartime song made famous by
Vera Lynn in her 1942 recording of the song, written by
Walter Kent and
Nat Burton in 1941. The song is one of Vera Lynn's best known recordings and is one of the best known popular songs from the World War II period. The song was writtten to uplift the spirits of the Allies during the height of the
Second World War, when Nazi Germany had conquered a great part of the landmass of Europe and was engaged in the air bombardment of Britain.
The songs lyrics looked forward to a time when the war would be over and peace would rule over the iconic
White Cliffs of Dover, Britain's de Facto border with the European mainland.
