Durant la récession qui s'amorce peu avant le krach boursier de 1929 pour s'achever au printemps 1933, le revenu national diminue pratiquement de moitié. La reprise, irrégulière, aboutit à un nouvel effondrement des marchés en 1937. Seule la guerre, qui éclate en septembre 1939, entraîne un redressement complet.
